Spatial ability as primary skill
Traditionally, the 2-dimensional X-ray images and its manipulation tools are straight forward and do not necessarily require spatial ability as a skill. Operators are trained with Computer Based Training (CBT) providing the required image recognition skills, within the user interface of the system deployed. This in contrast to the 3-dimensional CT images requiring a different approach. As they can be turned on three axes, spatial ability becomes a very important skill to have or develop, as this skill does not come natural to everyone.
Additionally, in a C3 screening environment, removal of Liquid, Aerosols and Gels (LAGs) and electronic devices is no longer required leading to higher complexity of bags. This revolution calls for a new approach in operator training.

Specifically designed for CT images
ProDetect is a CBT software program fitting seamless when implementing CT systems in the security checkpoint. Apart from the traditional initial and recurrent training tools, ProDetect is specially designed for 3-dimensional image recognition. The step-by-step approach ensures the operator becomes familiar with 3-dimensional functionalities at their own pace, so that even the operators with limited spatial ability learn to work with this new technology.
Also, ProDetect offers modules where the airport specific Standard Operating Procedures can be integrated ensuring the image recognition is connected to the actual operation. The operator is challenged to think further than just the recognition of threats and clear bags, and think about: “What comes after?”, “Who do I report to?”, etc.
On top of the shift from 2-dimensional to 3-dimensional image interpretation, operators will experience new alarm types generated by explosive detection algorithms and laptop removal. Depending on the operations of the airport, responses and the appropriate reactions vary. ProDetect is designed in such a way that the display of these alarms can be adjusted to the applicable concept of operations. Additionally, the training is supplemented with a special IED recognition training where operators learn about the different components, the specific features and how to identify them in CT images.
Currently ProDetect supports different image visualisations and GUI’s for CBT and HBS systems. Many more are under development.
